Ridge
Ridge Lytton Springs 2005
California, WINES
76% Zinfandel; 18% Petite Sirah; 6% Carignane in 2003
Lytton Springs bottlings are generally perceived as quintessential zinfandel, which is true, as far as it goes. On the Ridge Lytton Estate (East), zinfandel grows atop seven hills; petite sirah surrounds the zin on six, grenache on the seventh — an unusual configuration. There is some interplanting. Lytton Estate (West) is a magnificent hodgepodge of grapes, including more zinfandel, which seems so at home here. The wines are classic Dry Creek Valley. They show the potent, ripe boysenberry and blackberry of old-vine Sonoma zinfandel, notes of leaf and briar, and the intricacy of multiple varietals. Acid and tannin are firm, yet not overwhelming; in youth, at least, fruit predominates. These balanced, powerful zins become more nuanced with age. BIN: 0744442901005

Ch. Montelena
Ch Montelena Chardonnay 2005
California, WINES
Here it is, the wine that scared the French and beat the great White Burgundies in the famed 1976 Paris Tasting. OK, well not the exact wine but still one on Napa's best Chards. How do they get such crisp, elegant flavors out of the warm Napa Valley - the grapes are from a cool AVA, the newly designated Oak Knoll District of Napa.
Aromas of very rich Chardonnay dominate the nose, while green apple, melon, citrus (grapefruit) combine for a very nice mélange that contributes complexity. Also interesting, the 2004 exhibits more pronounced floral tones than is typical – perhaps an added benefit of night harvesting. On the palate this Chardonnay has a nice soft entry leading to a round, full-flavored impression of fruit, melon and citrus rind. It is elegant and balanced: supple, yet with crisp acidity, a direct result of no malolactic fermentation. BIN:

Ch. Montelena
Ch. Montelena Cabernet Sauvignon 2004
California, WINES
This highly rated Cabernet (if we need Parkers assurances), is rich and full, yet with excellent elegance and finesse, winemaker and owner Bo Barret is one of the top producers in Napa Valley.
Here is what Bo himself thought of the 2003:
The complex aromas show the influence from both the moderate and the warm periods of this long vintage. The wine has very pronounced ripe jammy fruit aromas of plum and black currant that display the warmth of the vintage. Less obvious Cabernet tones of licorice and earthy complexity from the cool middle of the season lurk under the more obvious notes of fruit. On entry this Cabernet is very round and full, while the mid-palate yields a graceful weight and balance with soft tannins. Notes of pepper add complexity to the smooth, rich cassis dominated flavors. BIN:

Conundrum
Conundrum 2005
California, WINES
Conundrum is truly a California wine, including grapes from the Napa, Monterey, Santa Barbara and Tulare counties. For the 2005 vintage, grapes were brought in over a two and a-half month period beginning August 30th - a couple weeks later than normal. Sauvignon Blanc was first, coming from eight different Napa Valley vineyards, where the warm weather can bring out this grape’s green-melon-like character at one vineyard site and its fresh-cut-grass character at another site. The next grape variety to ripen was Muscat Canelli, from warm Tulare County. Muscat is the grape that gives Conundrum its high-toned, floral aroma, along with some equally floral, cool-climate Viognier we grew in Monterey County. We also grew most of our Chardonnay and other varietals in Monterey County, one of the coolest, driest growing regions in California. The long season there—we harvested Chardonnay through November 19—allows the grapes to develop deeply ripe flavors and golden color while retaining great natural acidity. BIN: 0017224704133
