Piedmont
Piedmont is in the Northwestern part of Italy an area of land crammed between the Mediterranean Sea and the Alps. Much of the area is steep vineyards that are the foothills of the Alps, the area is full of vineyards, almost anywere one looks. The most important grape of the region is the aristocratic Nebbiolo, but the most planted is Barbera. Nebbiolo represents only about 6% of the vines in Piedmont. Gavi and Roero are the most important areas for still white wines and Asti is known for the excellent Moscato d'Asti as well as the less sophisticated Asti Spumante.

Barolo Bussia DOCG 1999

2001 has turned out to be an excellent vintage in the Piemonte region of Northern Italy. As with all Barolos this wine is produced from 100% nebbiolo planted on the best sites of the region. Prunotto was originally founded by the great winemaker (and today a consultant), Beppe Cola. Today the winery is owned and managed by the Antinori family.
This is a great wine with aromas of rose, licorice, violets, ripe dark cherry, vanilla and spice from the oak and a big rich, full palate that lingers for a very long time afterwards. Yet all this is beautifully balanced by structure, silky ripe tannins and acidity to allow for years more of enjoyment. From my experience this wine will be at this level for at least another 5 to 10 years.

Barbaresco DOCG 2000

Prunotto was originally founded by the great winemaker (and today a consultant), Beppe Cola. Today the winery is owned and managed by the Antinori family.
This wine has wonderful aromas of dried flowers (maybe even some roses), dark cherry, blackberry and a touch of mineral and hint of licorice. The palate is full and lush with plenty of tannins that are ripe and gentle. The finish is very long and complex with a lovely balance that begs to be retasted often.

There are historical documents from the “Rigestum Comunis Albe” that reflect the history of the Nebbiolo vine in the “Marcenascum” area already back in the 12th Century. Barolo Marcenasco is smooth, balanced, elegant and faithfully reflects the typical characteristics of the La Morra sub zone.
Aromas of licorice and tobacco with violets, cherries and rose intermingled, the palate is full and rich with a long and elegant finish. A great wine with excellent pedigree at a very reasonable price.

Serious Barolo from a small, boutique producer located in the Serralunga d’Alba commune of Barolo DOCG. The 2000 is a stunning wine that is drinking beautifully now and will age for gracefully for another decade and more. Both of the Wine Advocates Italian writers love this wine... Antonio Galloni rating it 95pts, Galloni is the current Advocate reviewer for Italian wines. Daniel Thomases rated it 92pts, and is the former Advocate reviewer for Italian wines.
